An essay is, in general terms an essay that is written to present the author’s argument. However the precise definition is not clear and could be a combination of a newspaper article or pamphlet, book or even a pamphlet. Essays are usually divided into formal and informal styles. Formal essay consists of structured arguments that are backed up by evidence, and typically concludes with an impressive conclusion. Informal essays are based on creative and witty writing, frequently without any support from any sort of “proof” however, it is often not conclusive and often misconstrued or blown out of proportion. It can be argued that formal essays are more likely to grab the interest of a reader than an informal essay, and it is for this reason that essays were always called the “lingerie of the century” – a reference to the theatrical and literary qualities of the essay style of writing.

The structure of an essay follows a clear sequence. The first paragraphs should be designed to build the argument of the essay. Then comes the body of the work which is the most complicated portion of the writing. The body of essays typically includes the conclusion. This is the summary of the argument and methodology of the essay and in the event that it is desired the author’s personal conclusions.

Writing an essay requires that you think in terms of reading, but of writing. Since it is the focal point to everyone who reads the essay, the title is the most important. The essay’s title must be captivating enough to draw the attention of the reader.

After the title, there is the body of the essay. The essay’s contents follow these five paragraph expository essay guidelines that are in line with the structure that is commonly used by professors in their teaching. The rules of composition for five-paragraph expository essays are not that different from the ones used in regular essays, although the style of writing an expository might differ. Writing academically requires less words and more complicated sentences.
